 Our History

Reading materials in the old days were used

mainly in two ways:

1) Reading for information, and of course:

 2) Reading to “pass” the time.

In our house, we used the Sears catalog “wish book” to pass the time while the Almanac carried us through our days of planting, harvesting, killing hogs, digging post holes, hunting, fishing or any of the hundreds of other things that took place on the farm.

Today, Almanacs are appreciated as much for the memories they evoke, as well as the new ones they create. The knowledge and information provided in an Almanac is immeasurable.

This Almanac was created and founded by A.J. Dees in 1980. From her home, she started out with 1 salesperson, 1 editor, 1 writer, 1 researcher and all those people only added up to 1  -herself. In just a short time, the Almanac was thriving.

A.J. maintained the foundation and the reputation she built through the Almanac and before long family traditions were made through information shared in Southern Farm & Land Almanac.

Today, older family traditions seem to be falling extinct in our world of advanced technology. We at Southern Farm & Land Almanac have chosen to utilize the technology, but keep the traditions, as well. After 25 years of publication, we’ve created a website providing some of the information shared in the Almanac. We encourage feedback, questions on planting, fishing and hunting, and we encourage you to share your favorite traditional story or recipe with us and other readers. We would like to share in and provide new traditional ideas to give to your family.

Please allow us to continue to be a part of your family traditions and daily life for another 25 years to come,

Sincerely,

Forrest W. Farmer – President/Publisher
